Introduction, Bloom's Taxonomy,
Rubric for Analysis Indicator, Rubric for Synthesis Indicator, Rubric for Evaluation Indicator

Introduction

For our group project, our team members decided to create generic assessment rubrics that could be used in our classrooms (and the classrooms of our peers) at our school. We created three rubrics that could assess specific content and learned skills in a uniform (and simplified) way. We hope to use the following rubrics to efficiently create assessment tools that will be easily understood by students and provide valuable feedback to teachers.

In the creation of our assessments, we based our work on the skill sets differentiated by Bloom's Taxonomy.
We created rubrics for the three highest levels of the taxonomy. Because many of the Maine Learning Results Performance Indicators (PIs) contain the same verbs (or similar wording) and assess the same skills as Bloom's top three skills sets in the taxonomy, the PIs can be assessed by utilizing the rubrics on this page.

These rubrics have been created in the hopes that they will be used to assess a variety of different skills. One wish of the creation team is that students will be able to (whenever possible) create unique products for assessments that match their own academic strengths and interests. (We suggest that students are assessed on many of their skills and not exclusively on their ability to write essays, etc.) We have listed a few examples of these alternate assessments below the analysis, synthesis, and evaluation steps on the taxonomy.

Please feel free to replicate our work for use in your classroom.

Bloom's Taxonomy:

1. Knowledge
2. Comprehension
3. Application

For the 4th, 5th, and 6th levels of the taxonomy, generic rubrics have been created that can be used to assess student work. A teacher can choose the appropriate rubric based on the task (or dictated by the State of Maine Learning Results Performance Indicator) being assessed. We have listed several suggested products that can be created to demonstrate understanding of the given skill set.

4. Analysis (Skill Summary: Compare and Contrast Concepts or Ideas)

Suggested Products:
    *Venn Diagram

*Debate -- Students note points on each side of the issue.
    *T-Chart
(A Pro's and Con's List or a Similarities and Differences List)

5. Synthesis (Skill Summary: Create something new or discover a new way of doing something.)

Suggested Products:
*Create or design a new "product" using given attributes.

*Change the viewpoint/ending of a situation (act out in play form, sock puppet theater, etc.).
*Design a product to teach a concept (ex: a game to teach a type of government).

6. Evaluate (Skill Summary: Judge & Support with Evidence)

Suggested Products:
    *Mock Court

    *2 Minute Editorial Piece
*Role plan a teacher, rate a "product" according to given criteria and justify decision.

Below are generic rubrics created to assess the skills listed above. We have chosen four criteria for assessment of each skill set (organization, concepts, accuracy, and word choice). Teachers may wish to add additional criteria to the assessment. Printable versions of each rubric are available and accessed by the link below the rubric.
