Principal Report to School Board

January 14, 2010
Sherry L. Levesque

Recognition:
The PTO provided supporting funds to the Civil Rights Team for our annual CAMFEL multi-media presentation. This year’s presentation focused on personal responsibility for setting and achieving goals. Students enjoyed the presentation and many participated in follow-up discussions in their classrooms. The PTO’s support of this annual assembly for all grade levels is greatly appreciated.

Many families sent cards and goodies into the Middle School during the holiday season. The students and staff enjoyed and appreciated all of these treats during the days just before the holiday break.

Topics of Interest/Successes
The spring drama productions are underway. There are two plays in production, both are “fairy tales gone wrong”. Twinderella is cast with mainly 5th and 6th grade students and Unhappily Ever After is cast with mainly 7th and 8th grade students. Both plays are musicals and will be performed in the spring.
The next 5th and 6th grade social will be held on Friday, January 15th. Activities will include sledding, Zumba dance/exercise, and games. Previous socials have been well attended by students in both grade levels. Socials are held from 2-4 on Friday afternoons and admission is $4.00. Refreshments are sold. Funds from this month’s social will be used for student activities during the rest of the school year.
The boy’s 7th and 8th grade basketball teams have ended their seasons and the girl’s basketball teams have begun their seasons. The cheering squad continues their season throughout the boys and girls rotation and cheerleaders will continue to cheer at the girl’s games. Nordic skiers have had a meet and are enjoying the snow that came over Christmas break.
The 5th grade band students have been participating in sectionals throughout the fall. Official band rehearsals are now scheduled for this grade level on Fridays. The 5th grade band is directed by Mary Patterson.
The second quarter will close on January 21. Teachers will finalize and verify grades and report cards will be printed during the week of January 25th. Report cards will be sent home in sign/return envelopes on February 1st. Parents of students who are in danger of failing a core course for the year will be notified through report cards and administrators will work with students, parents, and teachers to develop plans to promote a successful end to the school year.

Challenges:
Connecting students and families with resources beyond the Middle School has become a challenge. Many resources that were available in the past have been reduced or are no longer available due to budgetary cuts. This is especially challenging as we know that the reason many students and families are in need of help is due to the financial stressors they are facing at home.

Short-Term Goals:
-closely monitor all remaining lines within the 09-10 Middle School budget
-print and distribute 2nd quarter report cards on February 1st
-have Beacon teachers attend training and begin implementation of performance based model in selected classrooms
-have more teachers participate in RISC training
-develop plans for individual students who are at risk of failing a core course for the year

Emerging Long-Term Goals:
-edit budget for 10-11 school year
-review standards identified by State in all subject areas and align District curriculum
-continue efforts to identify students who do not meet standards in Math and English/Language Arts and implement remediation strategies
