Extended Learning Opportunities
Early Studies-USM, SMCC, CMCC, Bates College
Early Studies is an academic enrichment program for high school students sponsored by the University of Southern Maine. Early Studies is designed to offer qualified high school students the opportunity to matriculate in selected courses at USM. Interested students are encouraged to meet with their guidance counselor to review USM course offerings and required for enrollment. In addition to the early studies program offered through USM, two local community colleges (SMCC & CMCC) also offer opportunities for high school students to enroll in a college course. Eligible students may receive a partial tuition waiver from the community college. Bates College in Lewiston offers highly qualified seniors the opportunity to enroll in a Bates course. Students selected to the Bates High School Scholar Program are eligible to take one course each semester of their senior year, free of tuition. ATM Classes
Distance Learning (ATM) Classes are available to all students at Gray-New Gloucester through the ATM room. The ATM is a video classroom network, which has been designed to help schools reach the standards of Maine’s Learning Results and to provide students with the opportunity to access classes that might not be available in their own schools. The network connects more than 85 schools throughout the state of Maine with a variety of courses offered. Interested students should contact their guidance counselor for a schedule of available courses.
Virtual High School (VHS)
Web based courses which emphasis problem-based learning, group work and authentic assessment. Course elements include critical thinking and student-centered activities such as small group activities, peer-to-peer interactions, multi-media presentations, and class discussions. Courses are instructor-led and follow and asynchronous weekly interval calendar. VHS course are either a semester or a year in length, and are delivered to students around the United States and via the web. Interested students must see their guidance counselor.
